  • Occupation*:

There were two Markwicks in Canton and Macao about this time: Richard and Charles. Hopkinson gives Richard's age at death as 45, Braga states that he was "born on the 31st day of December 1791", which would make him 44.

In about 1825 Richard resigned his employment as steward in the Company's factory at Canton, and from 1826 to 1833 is listed among the private merchants there, as a shopkeeper. In 1830 he was a partner in Markwick & Lane, Co, a company that advertised itself as agent for the schooner Sylph, which carried passengers between Canton and Macao at a direct-route fare equivalent to HK$30. By 1833 he had his own firm, Markwick & Co, through which he also ran the European bazaar and a hotel at Canton, and the European warehouse and a hotel, Markwick's Tavern, in Macao. In 1836, C. Toogood Downing stayed at both hotels and left short descriptions of each. A small river-boat, an adjunct to his Canton hotel, was caught carrying contraband goods between his shop at Canton and the receiving ships off Lintin: 14 cases of silk goods and four containing a miscellany, in all worth over $5,000. The cases were confiscated while in transit. Marcwick died in Macao at 8am on Saturday 30 January 1836, after a lingering illness. His younger brother Charles was murdered in April 1857 at the age of 63, and lies buried in the Hong Kong Colonial Cemetery.
